Inter Mourns Sandro Mazzola, Club Icon and Italy Great, Dead at 83

Italian football is mourning Sandro Mazzola, the Inter great and former Italy international, who has died at the age of 83. His passing closes another living link to the Nerazzurri side that helped define the club’s European stature in the 1960s, while also recalling a family story inseparable from the game.

Mazzola spent his entire playing life bound to Inter, becoming one of the principal figures of the club’s most celebrated era. He was the son of Valentino Mazzola, the Torino captain and one of the defining talents of his generation, and his career carried that inheritance into a different great Italian team.

Across Europe and South America, tributes have recognised both sides of that legacy: a monument of Inter’s history, an Italy star of the 1960s and 1970s, and a player whose name belonged naturally among the major figures of the national game. One tribute described him as joining his father in football’s pantheon.

For Inter, Mazzola’s name remains woven into the club’s identity rather than confined to an old honours list. He represented an age in which the Nerazzurri became a continental force, and his death will be felt as the loss of a figure who carried the club’s colours for an entire lifetime.
