Yann Bisseck left Augsburg with a defeat on Germany’s record but with his own standing strengthened. The Inter defender started for the national team for the first time as Germany lost 1-0 to Greece on Sunday evening, a difficult home debut for coach Jürgen Klopp.
The result brought heavy criticism for Germany, yet Bisseck was among the few players to emerge with credit. Paired with Jonathan Tah in central defence, he delivered a controlled display in only his second senior international appearance.

His passing figures reflected the qualities Inter ask of him under Cristian Chivu: a centre-back prepared to help move the side up the pitch and maintain a high starting point in possession. Bisseck was especially active in Greece’s half, where 52 of his 57 attempted passes reached their target.
There was misfortune in the decisive moment. The ball ran through Bisseck’s legs on the move that ended with Kourmpelis scoring Greece’s winner, but that incident did not erase an otherwise assured first start.
“When we have the ball, we try to push the team forward,” Bisseck said after the match. “But we need to bring the midfielders into it more. A good individual performance is not enough for me: we lost and we have to improve.”
It was a response in keeping with a player trying to establish himself at international level rather than merely collect appearances. His Germany debut came against Italy in the 2025 Nations League, when he played the final 15 minutes, after spending the previous year pursuing a World Cup place without making the breakthrough.
The next target is clear: to become a genuine contender for Germany’s squad at Euro 2028. Sunday’s loss will not be remembered fondly by the hosts, but Bisseck gave himself a useful foundation, and Inter will see familiar evidence of a defender growing more comfortable with responsibility.
