Italy Host Turkey in Bologna Seeking Nations League Boost

Italy return to Bologna with a clear objective against Turkey: three points that would strengthen their hold on third place in the group and protect their status as a seeded team for the draw for the next European Championship qualifying campaign.

The Dall’Ara provides a personal setting for Roberto Mancini, who began his playing career in Bologna in 1981. His side arrive after a convincing 4-1 win in Bursa only days earlier, a result that makes Turkey appear a manageable opponent on paper. Yet Italy know the second meeting carries a different pressure, with the group positions and future seeding still at stake.

A difficult evening for Montella

Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella faces a depleted squad, with Kenan Yildiz, Hakan Calhanoglu, Yilmaz and Arda Guler all unavailable. The absences have narrowed his options considerably, but the match may also represent a defining moment for his position.

Montella retains the backing of his dressing room, and Turkey have every reason to treat the trip to Bologna as an opportunity to respond after the defeat in Bursa. Italy, therefore, cannot allow the previous result to lower their concentration.

Teams at the Dall’Ara

Italy begin in a 4-3-3 formation, with Gianluigi Donnarumma in goal. Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Gianluca Mancini, Alessandro Bastoni and Matteo Ruggeri form the defence, while Nicolo Barella, Romano and Doumbia make up the midfield. Vergara and Maldini support Gianluca Scamacca in attack.

Turkey line up in a 4-4-2. Cakir starts between the posts, behind Celik, Bardacki, Kabak and Kadioglu. Yuksek, Ozkan, Khaveci and Elmali occupy midfield, with Akgun paired with Simsir up front.

For Mancini and Italy, Bologna is not simply the setting for another international fixture. It is a chance to turn a positive result from Bursa into a more secure position in the wider European picture, while Turkey arrive determined to show that the first meeting does not define their campaign.
