Jake Oettinger Records 17th Shutout as Stars Blank Sharks 5-0

Dallas found its first win of the season in emphatic fashion Monday, blanking the San Jose Sharks 5-0 at American Airlines Center behind Jake Oettinger’s 17th NHL shutout.

  • Oettinger stopped all 13 San Jose shots for Dallas.
  • The Stars moved to 1-2-0 with their first victory of the season.
  • San Jose fell to 2-1-0.
  • Sharks captain Macklin Celebrini was scratched shortly before puck drop with a lower-body injury.
  • Yaroslav Askarov made 21 saves for San Jose.
  • Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson each posted a goal and an assist.
  • Roope Hintz recorded two assists.
  • Joel Kiviranta, Mikko Rantanen and Miro Heiskanen also scored for Dallas.

Dallas turns odd-angle chances into a rout

Heiskanen gave the Stars the lead with 1:09 left in the opening period. Benn’s original attempt appeared to be under Askarov, but Hintz worked the loose puck from behind the net to Heiskanen. The defenseman’s backhand caromed off Dmitry Orlov and Askarov’s right pad before crossing the line.

Kiviranta doubled the margin at 3:17 of the second. Oskar Back’s shot from the low slot deflected off Jacob Trouba, and Kiviranta collected the puck below the goal line before sending it off the down-and-out Askarov and into the net.

Benn made it 3-0 at 6:19. Robertson, working underneath the goal line, slipped a between-the-legs touch pass into the crease area, where Benn forced the puck past the left post.

Robertson added his own at 16:30 of the middle frame. He knocked down Sam Dickinson’s clearing attempt at the right point, moved into the slot and beat Askarov on the blocker side with a wrist shot.

Rantanen capped the scoring at 15:22 of the third period, firing a wrist shot from the left circle for the 5-0 final.

With the Sharks limited to 13 shots, Oettinger did not need a heavy workload, but he closed every door Dallas left open. The Stars converted their early pressure into a three-goal second period and never gave San Jose a route back into the game.
