Ottawa will finish its early road swing without Jake Sanderson, while the St. Louis Blues have lost Alexey Toropchenko for at least six weeks in a busy stretch of lineup news around the NHL. Washington is also monitoring defenseman Matt Roy ahead of its meeting with Pittsburgh, and Boston has moved Michael Eyssimont toward an AHL assignment.
Senators lose Sanderson for Boston and Detroit
Sanderson will miss Ottawa’s game against the Boston Bruins on Monday and Tuesday’s visit to the Detroit Red Wings after leaving Saturday’s 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Senators defenseman exited the Toronto game 12:45 into the first period with an undisclosed injury. He logged 4:29 over six shifts before heading off and did not return. Rather than continue with the club to Boston, Sanderson went back to Ottawa for testing.
Coach Travis Green said the early news was encouraging, though Sanderson will not be available for the remaining games on this trip.
- Sanderson missed part of training camp with another undisclosed issue.
- Ottawa plays Boston on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
- The Senators then face Detroit on Tuesday.
- Ottawa’s home opener is scheduled for Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Blues put Toropchenko on six-week timetable
St. Louis will be without Toropchenko for a minimum of six weeks because of an upper-body injury suffered in Friday’s season-opening 4-0 victory at the Dallas Stars.
Toropchenko was caught behind the Dallas net and driven into the glass by two Stars players with 16:32 left in the second period. He left the game and did not return, then sat out Saturday’s 6-1 loss at the Colorado Avalanche.
The 26-year-old forward produced 11 points, including four goals and seven assists, across 65 games for St. Louis last season. The Blues carry a 1-1-0 record into Tuesday’s road game against the Chicago Blackhawks, set for 8 p.m. ET.
Defensemen remain in focus in Washington and Chicago
Roy was absent from Washington’s Monday practice and is uncertain for Wednesday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Capitals defenseman was hurt during Saturday’s 3-1 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning, departing at 14:56 of the second period.
Roy has not recorded a point through two games this season. In 2025-26, he posted two goals and 17 assists in 79 games, finished plus-18 and averaged 20:37 per game.
In Chicago, Bowen Byram missed Saturday’s 4-3 loss at the Buffalo Sabres because of a family matter. Byram arrived from Buffalo in a June 23 trade and signed a six-year, $75 million deal on July 1 that begins next season. He set a personal best with 42 points last season, scoring 11 goals and adding 31 assists in 82 games.
- Washington hosts Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
- Chicago is 0-3-0 entering Tuesday’s home date with St. Louis.
- Byram’s absence came against the club that traded him to the Blackhawks.
Bruins send Eyssimont through waivers
Boston placed forward Michael Eyssimont on waivers Sunday with the intention of assigning him to Providence of the American Hockey League.
Eyssimont, 30, has not appeared in a Bruins game this season. He registered eight goals and 10 assists in 56 regular-season games in 2025-26, then went scoreless in two Stanley Cup Playoff appearances.
The Bruins are 2-1-0 heading into Monday night’s home game against the Senators, with puck drop listed for 7:30 p.m. ET.
