France’s new era has suffered an early change between the posts. Robin Risser will miss Zinédine Zidane’s first training camp as national-team coach after being deemed short of full fitness, opening the door for Como goalkeeper Jean Butez to receive his first senior call-up.
Butez steps in for Risser
- France and RC Lens medical staff held discussions over Risser’s condition ahead of the international window.
- The Lens goalkeeper was ruled unable to join the squad for the camp and Zidane’s opening four matches in charge.
- Butez, 31, has been selected as his replacement and will experience his first involvement with Les Bleus.
Butez joins a goalkeeper group led by established first choice Mike Maignan of AC Milan, alongside another uncapped player, Toulouse’s Guillaume Restes.
A long route to the France squad
The goalkeeper came through Lille’s academy before building his career in Belgium. He moved to Como in January 2025 and was in the starting line-up for the Lombardy club’s 2-0 defeat to Frosinone on Sunday, conceding twice.
His call-up arrives at the start of a demanding sequence for France and their new manager.
