Jeppe Corfitzen once belonged to Lecce’s bright Primavera class, a Danish winger whose rise seemed to run alongside those of Patrick Dorgu and Medon Berisha. Three years after the club’s unexpected 2022-23 Primavera title, their paths have separated sharply: Dorgu is a regular at Manchester United, Berisha wears Lecce’s No. 10, and Corfitzen has closed his football career to pursue professional cycling.
The coach and the club
Lecce’s youth title had presented a promising group to Italian football. Corfitzen contributed 12 goals during the campaign and scored the decisive goal in the Scudetto semi-final against Sassuolo. Alongside Dorgu and Berisha, he was seen as one of the central figures in a side that went on to win the national youth championship.
The Copenhagen academy graduate had arrived in Salento in 2022, joining a Lecce project built around giving young players a route towards the senior squad. He had long been regarded in Denmark as one of the standout talents of his age group. At 15, he had attracted Real Madrid scouts, although concerns over his physical reliability prevented a move from developing.
After the Primavera triumph, Corfitzen was promoted by Roberto D’Aversa, who intended to give the Danish prospects an important place in his plans. Dorgu established himself; Corfitzen’s opportunity proved far more limited. He made one Coppa Italia appearance against Como in August and one Serie A outing against Napoli, while also entering the Denmark Under-20 picture.
- Corfitzen helped Lecce win the 2022-23 Primavera championship, scoring 12 times and deciding the semi-final against Sassuolo.
- He moved into D’Aversa’s first-team group, appearing against Como in the Coppa Italia and Napoli in Serie A.
- A right-knee sprain was followed by a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament.
- After around a year and a half of treatment in Lecce without another match, he left the club in June 2025.
- Further rehabilitation and surgery led him to end his football career and begin a new sporting direction in cycling.
A knee that would not allow another return
Corfitzen had hoped that returning to Denmark after leaving Lecce would give him the chance to recover fully and revive his football ambitions. Instead, the physical burden continued. He underwent seven operations and completed hundreds of physiotherapy sessions before accepting that his knee could no longer withstand the demands of professional football.
In a video shared on Instagram, the 2004-born former winger said: “My journey in football ends here. It was not the ending I had imagined, but life can take different turns from those you planned.”
His next objective is cycling. Corfitzen has said he will use his Instagram account to document his transition from football into professional cycling, determined to keep sport at the centre of his life.
The change recalls Remco Evenepoel’s own early departure from football. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider had played in the youth systems of Anderlecht and PSV before moving into cycling after repeated fitness problems. Corfitzen now hopes that a career interrupted on the pitch can find a different road beyond it.
