Jonas Martin’s night at Stade Auguste Bonal ended in a confrontation rather than relief. After US Boulogne drew 1-1 at Sochaux on Friday, the 36-year-old midfielder was filmed appearing to try to strike a supporter outside the ground.
The move
Martin, a Besançon native whose family is from the region, was reportedly angered by repeated insults aimed at his relatives during the Ligue 2 match.
Footage from the aftermath shows the experienced midfielder moving towards a man and attempting to throw a punch. Another supporter intervened and prevented the incident from escalating.
A person recording the scene could be heard asking: “Jonas, are you all right?”
The former Ligue 1 player has made 273 appearances in France’s top division during his career, but this was an unusually volatile moment for a player now operating in a difficult campaign with Boulogne.
The French season around it
The draw at Sochaux did little to ease Boulogne’s early-season concerns. The club sit 16th in Ligue 2’s relegation zone after taking six points from their opening eight matches.
Friday’s result delivered a point on the road, but the pressure remains heavy around a side still searching for a way clear of the bottom end of the table.
