Jonas Urbig Keeps Bayern Safe in 3-1 Win at Freiburg

Bayern Munich left Freiburg with a 3-1 win, but only after goalkeeper Jonas Urbig protected a late lead and Michael Olise finished the game into an empty net. Aaron Danks took charge on the touchline while Vincent Kompany was absent amid concern over his health.

A reshaped Bayern side takes control

Injuries forced changes to Bayern’s selection. Lennart Karl and Brown were handed opportunities, while Dayot Upamecano provided an unexpected early breakthrough.

  • Upamecano carried the ball from deep during a counterattack, covering almost 80 metres before combining with Olise and scoring in the 16th minute.
  • Bayern continued to find room behind Freiburg. Karl delayed after beating his opponent, while Olise could not convert after a mistake by Makengo.
  • Brown tested Noah Atubolu Backhaus with a low shot, then created the second goal shortly before half-time. His pass from the left found Serge Gnabry, who finished through the goalkeeper’s legs for 2-0.
  • Harry Kane, playing on the eve of the Ballon d’Or ceremony, missed a clear chance from an Olise free-kick and sent his effort over.

Olise remained Bayern’s main creative outlet. Substitute Ismael Saibari also added forward runs, but Backhaus kept Freiburg alive. In the 80th minute, he stopped successive attempts from Kane and Saibari.

Freiburg force a late test

The match turned in the 81st minute. Makengo beat Konrad Laimer with a nutmeg and drove a low cross into the area. Tom Bischof diverted it into his own net, cutting Bayern’s advantage to one goal.

Freiburg pushed on and Bayern’s earlier missed chances became relevant. Urbig collected a Matanovic effort, while Sacha Boey had a Bayern goal ruled out because Saibari had been offside in the build-up.

Urbig saves Bayern before Olise seals it

  • Freiburg filled the box in stoppage time and Matthias Ginter came close to an equaliser.
  • Ginter’s shot was heading for the top corner, but Urbig made the decisive save.
  • In the fourth added minute, Backhaus came far from his goal and failed to deal with the ball alongside Rosenfelder.
  • Olise took advantage of the vacant net, scoring from distance to make the final score 3-1.

Backhaus had made several important saves to keep Freiburg in the contest. His final error, however, gave Olise the goal that ended Bayern’s difficult afternoon.
