Atlético Madrid sweep aside Osasuna as Jonathan David scores again
Jonathan David continued his fast start at Atlético Madrid with a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s Liga win over Osasuna. The Canadian forward, filling in for the injured Julián Álvarez, struck in the 24th minute before setting up Kang-in Lee after the interval.
It was David’s second league goal in as many appearances since making his debut against Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old, who has 82 Canada caps and had fallen out of favour at Juventus, needed two attempts to beat Osasuna goalkeeper Aitor Fernández.
Fernández had already produced an outstanding save to turn Lee’s 14th-minute effort away, and he later denied David again before the opener arrived. Osasuna briefly thought they had levelled soon afterwards, but the goal was ruled out following a disputed foul in an aerial challenge.
The visiting goalkeeper continued to keep the score down before half-time, making a double save from Lee and then David at close range in the 42nd minute.
Atlético took full control after the break. David supplied Lee, whose right-footed finish in the 54th minute doubled the advantage. Robin Le Normand added a third nine minutes later after reacting well to a corner.
Lee, one of Atlético’s brightest performers, then struck the post after Fernández had made another flying save. The fourth goal came in the 82nd minute, when Alex Baena finished after a fine pass from Johnny Cardoso.
The result followed Atlético’s clean-sheet win over Real Sociedad and gave Simeone’s team a convincing second consecutive league victory.
