Green Bay enters training camp with a major decision at left tackle, where 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan will compete with Rasheed Walker after spending his rookie year almost entirely at guard. Morgan logged 185 snaps on the interior before an injury ended his regular season nine games early, and his ability to earn a starting role could shape the Packers’ offensive line in front of quarterback Jordan Love.
What changed for the franchise
The Packers have three offensive-line starting spots largely settled. Elgton Jenkins has moved to center, free-agent addition Aaron Banks is positioned at left guard, and Zach Tom remains the right tackle. That leaves left tackle and right guard as the principal questions.
Walker returns as the incumbent on Love’s blind side. He has been dependable in pass protection but has had uneven moments in the run game. If Walker keeps the job, Morgan could be pushed into a reserve role unless he can beat Sean Rhyan at right guard, a spot Morgan did not win last season.
Green Bay’s secondary is also being reshaped following the release of Jaire Alexander, who subsequently joined Baltimore. Keisean Nixon is set to open camp as the top cornerback, while veteran newcomer Nate Hobbs has the versatility to line up either outside or in the slot.
Carrington Valentine showed progress during his second NFL season, but the alignment of coordinator Jeff Hafley’s safeties may affect how the cornerback rotation develops. Xavier McKinney is entrenched at one safety position, with Evan Williams and Javon Bullard expected to contend for the other. Bullard also offers nickel flexibility, giving Hafley options to tailor his five-defensive-back personnel to particular opponents.
The receiving corps brings another central camp storyline. First-round selection Matthew Golden joins a group that lacked week-to-week consistency and dealt with injuries in 2024. Jayden Reed remains a productive slot threat, though he is coming off a season marked by drops. Romeo Doubs appeared in 13 games during an uneven year.
Christian Watson is progressing ahead of schedule from his ACL injury. His availability for the start of the regular season, including whether he avoids the physically unable to perform list, will influence a crowded battle for roster spots and offensive snaps. Third-round rookie Savion Williams offers another developmental option, while Green Bay added return specialist and speed threat Mecole Hardman.
Reed and Golden appear to have strong claims on roster places, but the remaining receiver jobs and roles will be contested. The Packers are looking for a more reliable unit after last season’s disappointing results.
Green Bay’s rookies report to Lambeau Field on July 18, with veterans scheduled to arrive July 22. The Packers will have three sets of consecutive road games in 2025, their highest total since Matt LaFleur’s first season as head coach in 2019, excluding international contests. Green Bay went 4-2 in those six road games.
Next kickoff
The Packers open the preseason at home against the New York Jets on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. ET. They then visit the Indianapolis Colts on Aug. 16 before hosting the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 23.
