Portugal’s camp has carried a familiar shadow into its next fixture: Cristiano Ronaldo’s place in the national side, and the circumstances of his departure after the match against Norway. Jorge Jesus has chosen not to set out the full account before the team plays again, but the Portugal coach has made one point unmistakable from the touchline: the forward’s standing in the country is beyond dispute.
“I cannot ignore the Ronaldo subject,” Jesus said. “Cris is a symbol of the Portugal national team. He is a symbol of Portugal. Let that be completely clear.”
The issue began after Ronaldo was left unused against Norway and subsequently departed the Portuguese squad’s camp. It gathered further attention following Jesus’s earlier comments on the player’s status within the group, with the coach insisting that decisions taken were not ones he regretted.
A place in Portugal’s story, but common rules in camp
Jesus had previously acknowledged that certain players carry a particular stature, while stressing that the same rules apply across the squad. His latest remarks preserve that position: Ronaldo’s history and significance for Portugal are recognised, yet the manager has not offered details of the events that led to the 40-year-old leaving the gathering.
The coach has said he will address the matter in full once Portugal’s next match has been completed. “After the game, there will be plenty of time to speak about it in response to the question,” he said.
That reflects his earlier assurance that he would not avoid questions or disappear from the discussion once the final match had passed. For now, Ronaldo remains away from the squad and Jesus is holding back the fuller explanation, leaving Portuguese football to wait through one more international evening before the conversation resumes.
