Venezia’s first league win of the season arrived with a familiar name at its centre. Juan Jesus, once a Napoli player and now captain of the lagoon club, led Davide Nicola’s side to an unexpected 1-0 home victory over his former team.
A turning point at Venezia
The result gave Venezia three significant points against one of Serie A’s strongest sides and offered a reward after a run of defeats in which, in Juan Jesus’s view, the team had still shown its ability.
- Venezia went into the match against Napoli as clear outsiders.
- Nicola’s team held on for a 1-0 victory, their first of the campaign.
- Juan Jesus, wearing the captain’s armband, made a decisive goal-line clearance during the match.
- After the final whistle, the former Napoli defender credited both his teammates and his coach for the result.
Juan Jesus recognises the role of fortune
The defender did not pretend that everything had gone Venezia’s way by design. He said that luck had finally turned in the club’s favour, while insisting that the squad had deserved faith despite its earlier results.
“Sooner or later things had to go our way too,” Juan Jesus said. “Today we showed that. Even with the defeats, the team had shown it has quality. We leave with three very important points against a very strong side. Now we move on and focus on the next match.”
Asked about his intervention on the line, the captain admitted that it had been instinctive: “I do not even know how I got to it.”
Nicola’s mark on the performance
Juan Jesus also placed considerable credit with Nicola, whose work has been aimed at keeping Venezia competitive through a difficult opening period. “This result carries an important imprint from the coach,” he said.
For Venezia, the evening was more than a surprise against Napoli. It was the first tangible return of the season, delivered by a captain who knows the weight of facing his old club and who now has another task: ensuring that one defiant Sunday becomes the beginning of a more stable chapter.
