Pedro Neto Double Seals Chelsea’s 2-0 Win at Everton

Chelsea left the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a composed 2-0 win over Everton, Pedro Neto settling a contest that had been untidy, competitive and occasionally held together by stoppages. The winger struck seconds after the restart and then again at the start of a notably long added period, giving the visitors the sharper edge in a Premier League Matchday 7 fixture played on Saturday 17 October.

Everton had enough of the opening half to suggest they could make a proper afternoon of it. Thierno Barry twice tested Emiliano Martínez, first with a close-range header from Jack Grealish’s cross and later with a low effort after Vitalii Mykolenko supplied him. Merlin Röhl also brought a save from the Chelsea goalkeeper, while Grealish had an effort held following a James Tarkowski pass.

Chelsea had their moments before the interval, particularly when Moisés Caicedo struck the crossbar from inside the box after Jordan Henderson’s corner delivery. Cole Palmer forced Jordan Pickford into a save with a left-footed shot, while Neto was denied from distance in first-half stoppage time.

The game had already acquired the familiar marks of a scrappy league contest. Harrison Armstrong, Josh Acheampong, Tarkowski, Morgan Rogers and Neto all went into the referee’s book in the first period, and there were injury pauses for Barry and James Garner.

Neto finds the gaps

Chelsea did not wait around after the break. Neto scored with his left foot from the middle of the area in the 46th minute, placing the visitors in front before Everton could settle into the second half.

The goal changed the shape of the afternoon. Chelsea began to find room in transition, with Palmer going close from a counterattack and João Pedro seeing a close-range effort stopped. João Pedro also headed at goal from Henderson’s cross, while Rogers and Palmer each had further attempts as Chelsea pushed for a second.

Everton kept working. Barry headed Mykolenko’s cross on target late on, and Branthwaite put another chance wide from the centre of the penalty area. The home side won late corners and tried to force the issue, but the final pass or finish was not there. Tarkowski was caught offside after Christian Nørgaard attempted to send him through in added time.

There was another complication midway through the half when Branthwaite and Martínez required treatment after a collision. Chelsea’s goalkeeper could not continue, with Mike Penders taking his place in the 75th minute.

A long finish, then the clincher

Eleven minutes of stoppage time were indicated, although the decisive second goal arrived as the clock reached 90. Henderson’s attempt from outside the area was blocked, and the ensuing free-kick situation ended with Neto sweeping a low left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner.

Chelsea then used the closing stages to change personnel: Roméo Lavia replaced Caicedo, Marco Palestra came on for Jorrel Hato, Danny Welbeck replaced João Pedro, and Geovany Quenda entered for Neto. Everton had earlier introduced Tyrique George for Ainsley Maitland-Niles, followed by Nørgaard and Brennan Johnson in place of Armstrong and Grealish.

Palmer was booked during the second half, as was Nørgaard for a dangerous challenge. Neither caution altered the essential story: Chelsea had survived Everton’s best spells and carried greater threat when the spaces opened.

The week ahead will bring a different sort of reckoning for both sides. Everton must turn their periods of pressure into goals, having created openings without taking one. Chelsea, meanwhile, will take the clean sheet and Neto’s two-goal finish into their next fixture, with the forced change of Martínez the immediate concern from an otherwise satisfying away day.
