Kane, Yamal and Mbappé Lead Ballon d’Or 2026 Race

London will host the 70th Ballon d’Or ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday 26 October, with football’s individual prize set to move on from 2025 winner Ousmane Dembélé. The final pre-ceremony conversation has centred on a three-man contest: Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé.

The news from the club

Kane arrives from Munich with a case built on goals, silverware and a strong campaign in Germany. The England striker also made important scoring contributions for his national side at the 2026 World Cup, strengthening a candidacy that has been widely viewed as one of the most convincing in the field.

Yamal represents a different kind of landmark possibility. Barcelona’s young Spanish attacker has continued to unsettle opposing defences, create chances and influence decisive passages of matches. His club season and his part in Spain’s successes have kept him among the leading names, with the prospect of becoming the youngest Ballon d’Or recipient in the award’s history.

Mbappé remains firmly in the leading group after another prominent season for Real Madrid. Goals and major performances across the game’s biggest competitions, combined with his displays for France at the World Cup, have left the Frenchman in a close race with Kane and Yamal.

Rodri offers the principal midfield case among the standout contenders. The Spanish international was named best player at the 2026 World Cup, an individual honour that added weight to his challenge. Rather than relying on a striker’s scoring record, his argument rests on his ability to set the tempo, regain possession and give structure to the teams around him.

Lionel Messi is also part of the wider discussion. The Argentine, already an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has been considered following his World Cup involvement with Argentina and his performances for Inter Miami. His status and record ensure attention, although he has not been placed on the same level as the three frontrunners in the build-up to the gala.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland complete a broader group of players whose Champions League displays, club trophies and personal statistics have supported their cases. Yet the final focus in London has increasingly settled on Kane, Yamal and Mbappé as the leading candidates to take the prize.

The London date

The ceremony will reveal the successor to Dembélé at the London Palladium on 26 October. It brings together a season judged across domestic titles, European competition, individual output and the added weight of the 2026 World Cup.
