In Suwon, South Korea began a four-match international window with a 3-0 win over Ecuador, but the home crowd did not see one of its biggest names. Atlético de Madrid midfielder Kang-in Lee was left out of the matchday squad after a demanding opening stretch in Spain and the long journey home following the Madrid derby.
The news from the club
Robert Moreno chose not to risk the 24-year-old, who did not change for Thursday’s friendly. Kang-in Lee has become an important figure for Atlético early in the season, having quickly earned Diego Simeone’s trust, while his status with the national side makes him a central attraction whenever Korea play at home.
The decision was intended to give the attacking midfielder time to recover rather than add to the physical load created by club commitments and intercontinental travel. Korea still have three further friendlies in this break, offering Kang-in Lee possible opportunities to return to action before he heads back to the Spanish capital.
The international window and Madrid return
- Monday 28 September: South Korea v Uruguay, led by Diego Forlán.
- Friday 2 October: South Korea v Venezuela.
- Tuesday 6 October: South Korea v Uzbekistan.
After the Uzbekistan match, Kang-in Lee is due to return to Madrid ahead of Atlético’s trip to Alavés. That game at Mendizorroza is scheduled for Saturday 10 October at 16:15, leaving limited preparation time after his return journey.
Simeone may need to rotate his side for the Alavés fixture, with Manchester United due at the Metropolitano three days later for Atlético’s second league-phase match in the Champions League.
