In the shifting landscape between European football fame and global sportswear, Karim Benzema has seen a proposed return to Nike halted before the campaign reached the cameras. The French forward, currently without a professional club following his departure from Al-Hilal, had been lined up for a fashion-led launch with the American company and Corteiz, but the planned activation was cancelled at the last minute.
A campaign stopped before the shoot
- Benzema had recently brought a long-running association with Adidas to an end, opening the possibility of a new commercial relationship with Nike.
- The former Olympique Lyon and Real Madrid striker was in discussions to front a Nike collaboration with the London streetwear label Corteiz, connected to the release of the Shox R419 trainer.
- A photo shoot, arranged by Actually Creative Limited, had been scheduled for last Thursday as part of the promotion.

- A company spokesperson said the project should not be read as the start of a wider partnership between Benzema and Nike, adding that Nike regretted the way the discussions had concluded.
The cancellation has revived attention around Benzema at a moment when his playing future is also uncertain. Speculation over retirement has grown since he became a free agent, although neither the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner nor his representatives have confirmed that he intends to stop playing. Benzema has also not publicly addressed the abandoned Nike project.
Nike was part of Benzema’s early career in Lyon, before he moved to Adidas and became one of the German brand’s most recognisable footballers. The end of that Adidas deal had prompted expectations that he could again wear the Nike swoosh, potentially in an ambassadorial role. That prospect has not materialised through the Corteiz launch.
A decorated career and longstanding controversies
Benzema remains one of the most successful French players of his generation. His time at Real Madrid brought five Champions League titles, while his 2022 Ballon d’Or recognised the peak of a career built across Lyon and the Spanish capital.
His public profile, however, has long been affected by off-field cases that shaped his standing in France.
- In 2010, Benzema and Franck Ribéry were accused in connection with an encounter the previous year involving Zahia Dehar, who was underage at the time. Both players said they had not known her age, and a Paris criminal court acquitted them in 2014.
- In 2015, Benzema was implicated in an attempted blackmail case involving an intimate video of France teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
- He was later found guilty of complicity in the attempted blackmail plot, receiving a one-year suspended prison sentence and a €75,000 fine.
- The case also kept him out of the France national team setup for more than five years.
The cancelled campaign does not settle Benzema’s next move, either in football or commercial terms. For now, a player whose career has travelled from Lyon to Madrid and the Gulf is left waiting for clarity on both fronts.
