Koopmeiners Offers Spalletti a Timely Juventus Selection Boost

Teun Koopmeiners has returned to Juventus with a timely reminder of his value: not only a goal for the Netherlands, but another indication that his place in Luciano Spalletti’s squad may be broader than his early-season minutes have suggested. With nine matches in 29 days awaiting Juventus across Serie A and the Europa League, versatility may count heavily in a demanding part of the campaign.

The Dutchman scored in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Serbia, opening the scoring from a free-kick delivered from the right side of the penalty area. Nobody got a touch on the ball as it travelled through and found the net. It was Koopmeiners’ first goal of this international spell and a useful lift after a season in which he has been involved regularly without yet becoming a fixed starter.

He has appeared in each of Juventus’ first six fixtures between league and Europa League, although his only start came in the disappointing defeat to Sassuolo, a night when the whole side fell short. His contributions off the bench have carried more weight: he scored against Parma and supplied the pass for Federico Gatti’s equaliser against Milan. Those moments have helped him rebuild momentum after several uncertain months around his future.

A defensive option for Spalletti

For the Netherlands, coach Xavi used Koopmeiners as the left-sided centre-back in a back four, keeping him on the pitch for the full 90 minutes. It is not entirely unfamiliar territory. Koopmeiners played there earlier in his career at AZ Alkmaar and also occupied the position in Juventus’ 3-0 win away to Sassuolo last season.

Spalletti had already explored the same possibility after taking charge at Juventus. At Cremona, Koopmeiners was placed on the left of a three-man defensive unit to help bring the ball out from the back, before being tested in a four against Sassuolo. His latest international performance therefore offers further evidence for a role Juventus have already considered rather than an entirely new solution.

Xavi explained that Koopmeiners can operate in central defence because of his composure in possession. “We need him during the build-up,” the Netherlands coach said. “He can identify the free man and pass well. We want to attack more effectively, and he has the qualities to help us do that.”

Koopmeiners said the assignment had only been communicated to him in the final pre-match session, though playing alongside Virgil van Dijk eased the adjustment. “I found out only in the last training session that I would be a defender,” he said. “With a great champion like Van Dijk beside me, it was certainly easier. I am a multifunctional player, and I can enjoy myself in different roles. That matters to me.”

Juventus have already added Lucumí, a left-footed defender suited to starting moves from deep, but Koopmeiners’ adaptability remains a useful safeguard for Spalletti. It could prove especially relevant as the fixtures accumulate and the coach needs options across several areas of the pitch.

His longer-term future, however, is still not fully settled. Koopmeiners was considered a possible departure during the previous summer window and could again feature among the names assessed before the winter market. Juventus must balance incoming business with exits, both to manage the squad and to comply with UEFA financial parameters and registration limits. There have so far been no buyers emerging, while the player’s performances have become more convincing.

The next month offers Koopmeiners a chance to alter that conversation. If he can carry his international confidence back to Turin, contribute in midfield or defence when required, and maintain the impact he has shown in short appearances, he may yet turn a place on the margins of the market into a more secure role in Juventus’ season.
