Kylian Mbappé’s recovery has become a fresh talking point in Madrid after the France captain was seen at Paris nightclub Boum Boum on Wednesday night with his partner, Ester Expósito. The Real Madrid forward is currently sidelined by a left-knee problem suffered while on international duty.
The move
Mbappé scored the only goal in France’s 1-0 win in Turkey, the first of Zinedine Zidane’s new era with Les Bleus, but appeared to hurt himself when striking the ball. He left the pitch shortly afterwards and departed the France camp for Madrid the following day.
Real Madrid confirmed on Saturday that examinations had found a hyperextension affecting the posterior capsule of his left knee. The club said his progress would be monitored, with the diagnosis relieving fears that he could require surgery.
No return date has been given publicly, although reports in Spain have suggested an absence of between 10 days and two weeks.
The latest debate began after claims that Mbappé had not attended Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex for treatment over the previous two days. His night out in Paris then prompted criticism and speculation online about both the severity of the injury and his commitment to club and country.
Some supporters questioned why an injured Madrid player was not undergoing rehabilitation in the Spanish capital. Others revived memories of his controversial trip to Sardinia while recovering near the end of last season.
The criticism remains social-media reaction rather than evidence that Mbappé has ignored medical instructions. Real Madrid have not announced a disciplinary issue or stated where the player must complete his recovery.
The French season around it
For Mbappé, formerly of Paris Saint-Germain, the situation has also drawn attention in France because his injury arrived during a national-team window. One online reaction noted the irony of the forward being pictured alongside Marco Verratti, after Mbappé had previously spoken of the importance of eating and sleeping well when discussing Verratti’s repeated injury problems.

Madrid’s wider context has made every image and absence more sensitive. The club are fourth in La Liga after seven matches, six points behind leaders Barcelona, and have not won a major trophy since Mbappé arrived in the summer of 2024. José Mourinho’s side face Villarreal on 10 October and Sevilla on 18 October before travelling to Barcelona for the season’s first Clásico on 25 October.
Mbappé missed the previous Clásico, played shortly after the Sardinia controversy. Barcelona won that match, a result which sealed the league title, while the Frenchman angered some supporters by posting on social media during the game.
Tension had already been building before this latest episode. Mbappé was booed when he entered the pitch at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano ahead of the Madrid derby, after being targeted by far-right ultras following his decision to hide a message of support for Ceuta. The Spanish enclave in Morocco has faced a major migration crisis since the summer.
With the Clásico 25 days away, Mbappé’s knee, his recovery schedule and his public profile are again under close scrutiny in Madrid.
