Jordan Kyrou needed only 11 seconds of overtime to put a bow on Washington’s preseason win Friday, snapping a shot from the upper left circle to lift the Capitals past the Boston Bruins 3-2 at Capital One Arena.
Kyrou delivers in overtime for Capitals
The goal was Kyrou’s first in a Capitals uniform since his June 23 trade from the St. Louis Blues. Washington moved to 2-0-1 in preseason play, with Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson each posting a goal and an assist and Pierre-Luc Dubois setting up two goals.

- David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie supplied the Bruins’ goals.
Washington’s power play built the early cushion. Strome opened the scoring with 1:56 left in the first period, burying the loose puck after Wilson’s shot created a rebound.
Wilson doubled the lead 1:39 into the middle frame. Strome sent the puck through the crease, where it redirected off Dubois’ skate before Wilson collected it and tucked in a backhand.
Boston finds its push in the third
The Bruins, who finished their exhibition slate at 2-2-0, finally broke through early in the third. Geekie hammered a one-timer past Thompson at 3:40 after Pavel Zacha’s bouncing feed reached him.
Pastrnak leveled the game 2-2 on the power play at 5:56, driving a one-timer from the left circle. Neither club settled it in regulation, setting up Kyrou’s quick finish after the opening faceoff in overtime.
Boston now turns toward its regular-season opener, hosting the New York Rangers on Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Rangers close preseason with rout of Islanders
At UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, the Rangers wrapped up their preseason schedule with a 6-1 victory over the Islanders. Mika Zibanejad and J.T. Miller each recorded a goal and an assist for New York, which completed exhibition play at 2-2-0.
- Adam Fox registered three assists.
- Pavel Dorofeyev collected two helpers.
- Oliver Bjorkstrand, Tye Kartye, Gabe Perreault and Will Cuylle also scored for the Rangers.
- Igor Shesterkin made 15 saves.
- Pierre Engvall had the lone Islanders goal.
- Semyon Varlamov surrendered six goals on 27 shots for New York, which stands at 1-2-0.
Bjorkstrand started the Rangers’ surge at 3:48 of the opening period, finishing Dorofeyev’s pass from along the goal line. Miller made it 2-0 just 55 seconds later on the power play, beating Varlamov on the short side at the left post.
Kartye pushed the margin to three at 3:27 of the second with a wrist shot from the left circle. Perreault redirected Vladislav Gavrikov’s point drive at 13:12, then Cuylle added another at 17:04 for a 5-0 lead.
Zibanejad scored on the power play 1:23 into the third to extend the gap to six. Engvall got the Islanders on the board at 11:22, but the Rangers had already turned their preseason finale into a one-sided night.
