Spain can move within reach of the quarter-finals against the Czech Republic tonight, but Luis de la Fuente’s selection remains difficult to read after two demanding matches and with Croatia still to come. One place appears secure: Lamine is expected to start if he suffers no late fitness setback.
Quick facts
- Spain face the Czech Republic tonight with quarter-final qualification within reach.
- Lamine is set to start, fitness permitting.
- Rodri and Pedri could return to a strong midfield alongside Dani Olmo.
- Pubill has started at right-back, while Cubarsí is due to rest.
- David Raya could be handed a start after remaining professional in a reserve role.
Those close to Lamine say he always wants to be on the pitch, and Spain are likely to need that appetite as the group schedule tightens. De la Fuente has the option of choosing a near first-choice side rather than heavily rotating before the Croatia match.
Rodri and Pedri are among the leading candidates to come into midfield, with Olmo also in contention. Spain started their Sevilla match with Zubimendi, Fabián and Fermín, underlining the depth available to the coach; even Mikel Merino would not necessarily make this particular three-man unit.
There is also a decision to make in goal. Raya has maintained his standards despite being used as a deputy, and De la Fuente may decide that one of Spain’s four fixtures should go to the goalkeeper as recognition for that work.
Pubill has so far been a regular at right-back. Cubarsí will be rested against the Czechs, leaving De la Fuente to choose between a Huijsen-Le Normand partnership or a defence including Laporte, who could return.
On the left, Fran García is pushing to replace Cucurella after the latter’s two consecutive high-intensity outings. Spain’s strength in options gives De la Fuente room to manage the week, but the chance to put the quarter-finals within touching distance may yet bring a line-up close to full strength.
