At 19, Lamine Yamal is already used to the noise around him. Barcelona’s teenage winger has answered the latest criticism of his public manner, insisting that the confidence heard in his press appearances comes from honesty rather than arrogance.
The move
Yamal has rejected suggestions that he is deliberately provocative when speaking to the media. Some observers have interpreted his assured tone as arrogance, but the Spain international says he prefers direct and genuine answers.
“I think people who say that are having fun with me,” Yamal said. “At press conferences, I like listening to people who speak from the heart, who are sincere and who can make me laugh. So people are mistaken when they put that label on me.”
The winger believes the reaction says more about the expectations placed on footballers than his own attitude. “I feel that people are not used to someone answering sincerely,” he added.
Yamal made his professional debut at the age of 15 and, a little more than three years later, has become one of the defining young players in European football. His rise has brought scrutiny alongside the praise for his unusual technical ability and early maturity.
The French season around it
His comments arrive after a year in which French football featured in one of the major individual landmarks of his career. Yamal finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or vote, behind Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé.
The Barcelona player is again among the leading contenders for the 2026 award. By then, his record includes three Spanish league titles, won in 2023, 2025 and 2026, as well as European and world champion status with Spain.
For the Ligue 1 audience, Dembélé’s victory over Yamal in the previous Ballon d’Or ballot remains a notable Parisian moment. Yet Yamal’s response to the debate around his personality suggests he has little intention of softening the self-belief that has accompanied his rapid ascent.
