Lamine Yamal is already looking towards football’s longest horizon. The Barcelona winger, still only 19, has spoken of his desire to leave a lasting mark on the game, while rejecting any attempt to place him in direct competition with Lionel Messi or Pelé.
In a recent filmed discussion with former Real Madrid forward and sporting director Jorge Valdano, Yamal made a bold assessment of his early achievements. He pointed to Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Maradona among the sport’s defining figures, but argued that few modern players had collected so much success at such a young age. He acknowledged Pelé as the historical exception.
Aiming for a legacy of his own
The world champion has now expanded on that message, insisting that his ambition is not built on overtaking any past icon. Yamal said he plays to make history and hopes that, three decades from now, young supporters will remember him as an outstanding player in his own right.
“I want to create history,” he said. “I want children in 30 years to say that I was a really great player too. But it is not an obsession. I never tell myself that I must be better than Pelé or better than Messi.”
Rather than chase comparisons with the game’s most celebrated names, the Barcelona star said he wants his career to stand independently. “I do not want to compare myself with anybody,” Yamal added. “I want to be Lamine Yamal. I want people to remember me as Lamine Yamal, and I hope to be among the greats.”
His comments come as he begins to frame his case for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with the winger making clear that individual recognition would be part of a wider ambition: building a legacy that carries his own name.
