Lawrence Tanter, Lakers’ Voice for 43 Seasons, Dies at 76

The Lakers have lost one of the constant voices around their home floor. Lawrence Tanter, the club’s public-address announcer for 43 seasons, died Wednesday at age 76.

Tanter stepped away from the microphone in June, closing a run that began in 1982. The Lakers had planned for him to remain connected to the game-night operation as a special adviser for presentation after his retirement.

For more than four decades, Tanter handled the arena introductions and in-game announcements through multiple Lakers eras, from Showtime through the Kobe Bryant championship years and into the present day. His tenure included 10 NBA championships.

The Lakers remembered Tanter as a foundational figure in the building, saying his voice had become the soundtrack of home games and that he would remain a treasured part of the organization’s family.

His final season on the public-address mic completed a 43-year stretch with the franchise, one of the longest-running game-presentation assignments in the league.
