Lazio Beat Parma to Take Serie A Top Spot Under Gattuso

Rome woke to a new Serie A leader after Lazio held off Parma at the Stadio Olimpico, taking a 2-1 victory that looked settled long before a late scare altered the mood around the ground.

Gennaro Gattuso’s side had been the stronger team and deserved their advantage, but Simone Lontani’s stoppage-time goal ensured the final moments were less comfortable than Lazio had expected. The result lifts the capital club to 22 points, three clear of Inter, who still have their match from this round to play.

How Lazio took control

  1. After a goalless first half in Rome, Kenneth Taylor broke the deadlock in the 50th minute to give Lazio the lead.
  2. Eight minutes later, Parma defender Diego Carlos turned the ball into his own net, doubling Lazio’s advantage and appearing to put the contest beyond reach.
  3. Parma found a response only deep into added time, when Lontani scored in the 95th minute to reduce the deficit.
  4. Lazio managed the remaining seconds without conceding again, preserving a win that sends them to the summit of the Italian table.

A valuable night in the capital

The margin was narrow at the final whistle, yet Lazio had established enough authority over the match to make their three points deserved. Taylor’s opener and the own goal from Diego Carlos rewarded a more commanding display from the home side before Parma’s late strike brought tension to the Olimpico.

For Gattuso, the victory extends a strong run and places Lazio at the front of the Serie A race. Inter remain within reach, however, with their game in hand leaving the shape of the leading positions far from settled.
