Lazio remain top of Serie A after a 2-2 draw with Milan at the Stadio Olimpico, but Gennaro Gattuso’s side were left to regret allowing a commanding first-half performance to slip away. Roma, away to Torino, and Inter, at home to Udinese, can still reshape the leading positions when they play on Monday.
Lazio lead, but Milan recover after the interval
The Roman side went into the break two goals ahead and looking in complete control against a Milan team that struggled for rhythm and ideas. Matteo Cancellieri opened the scoring in the 10th minute, while Tijjani Noslin added a second six minutes before half-time.
The first goal began with Nuno Tavares finding Mattia Zaccagni, whose cross travelled to the far post. Cancellieri took advantage of a costly error from Pervis Estupiñán to put Lazio in front.
Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan then produced an important save to deny Zaccagni a second. Lazio continued to threaten, and Davide Frattesi narrowly missed after another Milan turnover.
Noslin’s goal reflected Lazio’s greater authority before the break. Tavares released Kenneth Taylor, who supplied the cross; Noslin headed against the crossbar before following the rebound and scoring despite the challenge of Koni De Winter.
Moreira changes the match
Rúben Amorim acted at half-time, with Luka Modric among the players withdrawn. The changes altered the direction of the contest, as Milan took control after the restart.
Diego Moreira, introduced in the 46th minute in place of Estupiñán, became Milan’s decisive figure. The Belgian midfielder, signed from Strasbourg during the summer, reduced the deficit in the 65th minute with a left-footed volley from Christian Pulisic’s delivery.
Only two minutes later, Moreira brought Milan level. Adrien Rabiot provided the pass and Moreira struck with his left foot from the edge of the area to complete a rapid double.
Milan pushed hardest in the closing stages and came closer than Lazio to finding a winner. Moreira had an opportunity to complete a hat-trick, but Christos Mandas held firm in the Lazio goal.
The result leaves Lazio first, one point clear of their two closest challengers before Monday’s fixtures. Milan, having rescued a point from a difficult opening half, move into fourth place.
