Leeds United left Sunderland with a goalless draw that did little for either side’s ambitions, as Daniel Farke’s visitors failed to turn their extra recovery time into the win needed to make ground on the Champions League positions.
The point takes Leeds to 11 points and seventh place, four behind the qualifying places for Europe’s leading competition. Sunderland, still carrying the effects of Thursday’s European trip to Poland and their draw with Lech Poznan, remain bottom with five points, two adrift of safety.
A stalled Leeds run
- Leeds last won on 14 September, when they swept aside Newcastle United.
- Since then, Farke’s team have drawn against Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Sunderland.
- Arsenal have also beaten Leeds during that four-match winless sequence.
- Despite having had more rest than their hosts, Leeds could not find a way through at the Stadium of Light and had to settle for a point.
The result leaves the Whites short of the momentum required to challenge the teams above them. Their defensive solidity brought a clean sheet, but the lack of a decisive moment in attack meant no reduction in the gap to the Champions League places.
A demanding fortnight on Wearside
Sunderland’s own wait for a league victory stretches back to 8 September. Their recent schedule has added to the strain: the Black Cats travelled to Poland for their European draw with Lech Poznan before returning home to face Leeds.
- Sunderland host Brentford in the League Cup in midweek.
- They then meet Frank Lampard’s Coventry City next week in a significant fixture between relegation rivals.
- Before the next international break, Sunderland face a run of matches every three days across the following two weeks.
For Sunderland, the Coventry match offers a direct chance to improve a precarious league position. For Leeds, the draw is another reminder that a return to winning form is required if seventh place is to become a platform rather than a ceiling.
