Mbappé Puts Real Madrid Ahead in Tense Clásico Against Barcelona

Barcelona and Real Madrid carried the weight of a season’s defining evening into the Spotify Camp Nou, with Hansi Flick and José Mourinho overseeing a Clásico that had already offered tension, mistakes and one decisive piece of fortune before the hour mark. Real Madrid led 1-0 early in the second half, Kylian Mbappé the scorer from a chance created more by circumstance than design.

The coach and the club

Flick’s Barcelona began the tenth Liga round with Joan García in goal; Xavi Espart, Pau Cubarsí, Gerard Martín and João Cancelo across the back; Rodri, Pedri and Fermín in midfield; and Lamine Yamal, Gordon and Raphinha in attack. Gordon was selected on the left ahead of Adeyemi, while Raphinha retained his place after returning from injury, having also started against Paris Saint-Germain.

The home side were forced into an early alteration after 30 minutes. Espart suffered a muscular problem and was replaced by Alejandro Balde. Balde went to the left side of the defence, with Cancelo moving across to the right.

Mourinho’s Real Madrid lined up with Andriy Lunin; Federico Valverde, Ibrahima Konaté, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella; Bernardo and Aurélien Tchouaméni; Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Diomandé and Mbappé.

Lunin’s inclusion was the principal surprise of the visiting selection. Thibaut Courtois was unavailable through illness, handing the Ukrainian his first appearance of the season. His last Liga outing had come against Espanyol in May, while his most recent Champions League match was the 4-3 defeat away to Bayern Munich in April.

Mourinho was also required to manage a difficult individual contest. Cucurella repeatedly found himself under pressure from Yamal, and the Real Madrid coach urged his full-back to remain composed after a shirt pull on the Barcelona forward went unpunished.

A first half decided by a loose ball

The match began at 21:00 in a packed and heavily choreographed Camp Nou. Barcelona wore their usual red-and-blue strip, carrying the word GOLF on the shirt in reference to Tyler, the Creator’s GOLF WANG label.

Florentino Pérez was not present for Real Madrid. Pirri, the club’s honorary president, represented the visitors, while former Barcelona figures including Frank Rijkaard, Henk ten Cate, Ronald Koeman, Jordi Cruyff and Gheorghe Popescu were expected in the stands.

The early exchanges reflected the importance of the occasion. Yamal threatened after Bernardo lost possession in the Real half, although Cucurella’s deflection helped contain the danger and Lunin gathered. Gordon then tested the goalkeeper from outside the area, before Güler drove in from the right and forced Joan García into a one-handed save.

Barcelona had their moments. Pedri advanced into the area and found captain Raphinha, whose left-footed effort cleared the crossbar. A mistake by Güler later allowed Gordon to run at Konaté from the left, but Lunin produced a sharp save to turn the shot behind.

Mbappé first sent an acrobatic attempt over after Güler’s delivery, but he made the breakthrough in the 41st minute. Diomandé’s ball into the box was cleared by Gerard Martín only as far as the French forward, and the rebound finished in the net for 1-0.

Barcelona could have answered quickly when Yamal received the ball on the right of the penalty area, only to steer his shot wide of Lunin’s near post. Before half-time, Bellingham split the home defence with a fine pass for Mbappé, whose driven cross-shot struck the base of the left post.

The contest remains open

Real Madrid resumed without a substitution and with their one-goal advantage intact. The match had been played at considerable speed, with Yamal and Mbappé, two of the anticipated protagonists on the eve of the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, each involved in the principal attacking episodes.

Four minutes into the second half, Barcelona needed a recovery from Gerard Martín to prevent a dangerous Real counterattack. Bellingham had beaten Cubarsí in the air and driven towards goal with Mbappé available for a two-versus-one situation. Martín blocked the passing lane, forcing Bellingham to delay before losing his balance and miscuing his finish.

The fixture arrived with evidence that neither side tends to fade late. Barcelona had scored nine league goals between the 76th and 90th minutes, while Real Madrid had seven in that period. The visitors had also conceded three goals in the final stages of matches and another three shortly after half-time, leaving ample room for the evening to develop beyond Mbappé’s fortunate opener.
