In the old mining country of Artois, Lens found the intensity that had been missing since late August and denied Lyon the chance to move to the top of Ligue 1. Paulo Fonseca’s side were beaten 2-1 at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, their first league defeat of the season.
Lyon arrived with an opportunity to overtake Monaco but instead remain second on 11 points, two behind the leaders. They could yet slip out of the top three by the end of the round.

The home side, Ligue 1 runners-up last season, had not won a league fixture since 22 August. Under Yannick Cahuzac, however, Lens looked revived in his second match in charge and earned his first victory at the club.
Lens pressed sharply from the opening stages and repeatedly tested Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif. They also played through Fonseca’s defensive structure with assurance, controlling long periods while Lyon struggled to offer a threat.
Florian Thauvin was central to the breakthrough, creating Sotoca’s 36th-minute finish. The former France international then set up Udol for the second goal with 14 minutes remaining, seemingly putting the contest beyond Lyon.
Merah reduced the deficit five minutes from time, but Lyon could not complete a recovery. Their previous league outing had brought a 4-0 win over Rennes three weeks earlier; this was a far flatter performance.
Lens will take momentum and a little breathing space in the table into Tuesday’s Champions League visit of Sporting CP. The result, though, came with fitness concerns after Gradit was substituted in the 54th minute and Openda followed six minutes later.
