Nikita Kucherov’s contract clock has moved into a new phase, but Tampa Bay Lightning management remains confident its franchise scorer will stay in the room for years ahead. The winger is entering the last season of his current deal while extension talks continue with the club.
Lightning keep Kucherov extension talks open as contract rules change
Tuesday marked Kucherov’s final opportunity to sign an eight-year extension with Tampa Bay. A new Collective Bargaining Agreement took effect Wednesday, reducing the maximum term available to a player re-signing with his current club to seven years.
Kucherov has been eligible for a new contract since July 1 and could reach unrestricted free agency after the coming season. He is finishing the eight-year, $76 million agreement he signed on July 10, 2018, a deal carrying a $9.5 million annual cap hit.

General manager Julien BriseBois said conversations with Kucherov’s representative have not stopped. He acknowledged that both sides would prefer to settle the matter, but said the organization’s objective remains a long-term agreement keeping the star forward in Tampa.
There is no hard deadline in the negotiations. BriseBois noted that Kucherov would not officially become a free agent until July 1 next year and said the club hopes the process does not reach that point.
Kucherov did not offer much on his future when asked, turning the focus back to the season ahead. “My job is to help this team this year,” he said, adding that his attention is on what he can control and giving his best on the ice.
Still driving Tampa Bay’s attack
Kucherov finished second in NHL scoring last season with 130 points and captured the Hart Trophy as the League’s most valuable player. His 86 assists helped power Tampa Bay’s offense, and he has now cleared the 100-point plateau in four consecutive campaigns.
That active run trails only Connor McDavid’s six-season streak. Kucherov also joined Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and McDavid as the only NHL players to record 100 assists in one season, reaching that mark in 2023-24.
Across 12 NHL seasons, all with the Lightning, Kucherov has collected 401 goals and 723 assists for 1,124 points. Stamkos holds the franchise record at 1,137, leaving Kucherov 14 points from the top spot.
BriseBois called Kucherov a historically elite player and argued that his work from ages 30 through 32 stands among the best three-year stretches ever produced by a forward. The general manager said he sees no reason to expect a significant drop-off as Kucherov moves deeper into his 30s.
Playoff push remains the immediate priority
The Lightning’s bigger concern inside the dressing room is ending a four-year run of opening-round playoff exits. Tampa Bay was eliminated by the Montreal Canadiens in seven games in last season’s Eastern Conference First Round.
The club has not won a postseason series since beating the New York Rangers in the 2022 Eastern Conference Final. Kucherov was a key piece of Tampa Bay’s Stanley Cup championship teams in 2020 and 2021, and his focus is on getting the group back to that standard.
