Argentina’s farewell night for Lionel Messi carried the weight of family as much as football, with the captain’s youngest moments away from the ball proving among the most moving.

After the match and Messi’s address, his son Thiago was overcome by emotion and began to cry. Messi went to him, held him close and offered comfort in a scene that quickly travelled far beyond the stadium.
Thiago had been beside his father on the pitch during the Argentine anthem, standing alongside Messi as the forward himself fought back tears before the game.
