Lionel Messi’s football interests have moved further into Spain, with the Argentina captain confirmed as the new owner of CD Eldense, the struggling Segunda División side.
A second Spanish club for Messi
- Messi completed the purchase of UE Cornellà, a fifth-tier Spanish club, in April.
- Several weeks of speculation over a possible deal for Eldense followed.
- CD Eldense confirmed on Thursday that Messi has acquired the club, although the transaction still requires approval from Spain’s Higher Sports Council.
The 39-year-old remains an active player with Inter Miami while adding another club to his ownership portfolio. Eldense are currently 19th in Spain’s second division.
Long-term plan at a historic club
Founded in 1921, Eldense described the takeover as the start of a new phase in the institution’s history. The club said Messi’s arrival in Spanish professional football as owner would form part of a long-term project.
The stated aim is to strengthen Eldense on sporting, institutional and social levels, while helping the club establish itself and progress in professional football.
Eldense also stressed that the plan is intended to protect the club’s roots, history and blaugrana identity. The deal cannot be fully completed until the required authorisation is granted under Spanish law.
