Cody Gakpo’s international break has ended abruptly after an ankle injury forced the Liverpool forward off during the Netherlands’ 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday.
The 27-year-old was substituted shortly after the 15-minute mark following a heavy tackle. He will now leave the Dutch squad and return to Liverpool for further medical checks in the coming days.
Gakpo returns to Liverpool for tests
Liverpool and the Netherlands confirmed the winger’s early departure at the same time, with the Premier League club stating that additional examinations will determine the extent of the ankle problem.
Gakpo had made a bright start to the international window. He scored in the 1-1 draw with Germany last Thursday, becoming the first Netherlands scorer of the Xavi era.
He will not feature again for the national team during this break, leaving Liverpool awaiting the results of his assessment before assessing his availability for the return of club football.
