Lorient-Brest and Nice-Rennes Rescheduled After Police Requests

French football is again adjusting to a tense weekend beyond the stadium gates, with Ligue 1 rescheduling two more fixtures after police requests linked to planned protests across the country.

Key takeaways

  • Lorient’s home match against Brest has been moved from Saturday 31 October to Monday 2 November, with kick-off at 20:45.
  • Nice v Rennes will now be played on Friday 30 October at 19:00 rather than on the Saturday.
  • Both changes were requested by local prefectures because of the latest planned “Act III” demonstrations.
  • Lyon v Angers and Troyes v Le Mans remain scheduled for Saturday 31 October at 20:45.
  • Paris Saint-Germain v Olympique Lyonnais was also pushed back by one day, from Sunday to Monday, after an earlier police order in Paris.

Another disrupted Ligue 1 weekend

The Professional Football League confirmed that Lorient v Brest will be staged on Monday 2 November at 20:45. The Breton derby had initially been due to take place on Saturday 31 October.

The alteration follows a request from the Morbihan prefecture, with the latest nationwide phase of the social protest movement expected to take place that Saturday. Authorities have sought to reduce the strain on policing resources during a weekend likely to bring demonstrations in several French cities.

Nice v Rennes has also been brought forward. The match at the Allianz Riviera, originally set for Saturday, will instead kick off on Friday 30 October at 19:00 after intervention from the Alpes-Maritimes prefecture.

Two Saturday matches still unchanged

For now, the other Ligue 1 fixtures listed for Saturday 31 October are unaffected. Lyon are still due to host Angers at 20:45, while Troyes v Le Mans is also retained in the same evening slot.

The latest amendments come after PSG’s meeting with Lyon was moved from Sunday to Monday. That match carries significant weight in the race for the Ligue 1 summit, but it was postponed on the instruction of the Paris police prefecture because demonstrations had been planned in the capital over the weekend.

With the calendar already being reshaped by public-order concerns, clubs and supporters face another round of late changes as the French season continues.
