Fiorentina have given Luca Ranieri a longer place in the club’s future, renewing the defender’s contract until 30 June 2029 with an option that could extend the agreement by a further year, to 30 June 2030. For a player who arrived in Florence at 13, the new deal carries the weight of a relationship built across the club’s youth system, the first team and a growing role of responsibility in the dressing room.
The coach and the club
Ranieri’s extension confirms Fiorentina’s faith in one of their own. The defender came through the Viola academy and has made 164 appearances for the club across Serie A, the Coppa Italia, the Italian Super Cup and the Conference League, scoring 12 goals.
His path in the Fiorentina shirt has also run alongside his international development: he represented Italy at every youth level before reaching the senior national team.
The 26-year-old described Fiorentina as his family and said he was proud to continue with a club that has shaped much of his career.
“I am very happy and honoured to stay with this great team, which has become a family to me,” Ranieri said. “I have been here since I was 13 and this is my fifth consecutive season in the first-team group. I will keep giving everything every day, proving my worth and repaying the trust the club have shown in me.”
He also recognised the particular significance of Fiorentina’s centenary season, while pointing to the confidence placed in him by the coach, director and president.
“I know how important this season is,” he said. “Now I am among the more experienced players and the younger lads look at you. You have to train at your best, stay focused and set the right example through your behaviour. I am working to be a reference point for the younger players.”
A captain’s responsibility
Ranieri said he could not have foreseen reaching this stage when his journey began in Fiorentina’s academy. Yet his standing has changed steadily: he has been part of an important Viola side and wore the captain’s armband for an entire season, an experience he called extraordinary.
The renewal therefore gives Fiorentina continuity beyond a single campaign. In Ranieri, the club retain a defender tied closely to its identity, a player familiar with its expectations and increasingly conscious of his duty towards the next generation arriving in Florence.
