Luka Lochoshvili arrived at 1. FC Köln as a €4.5 million defensive leader. Four Bundesliga rounds into the season, the Georgia international has shown the tools that persuaded Köln to buy him from Nürnberg, but also the costly hesitation that has marked the club’s uneven start.
A difficult opening spell
- Lochoshvili helped Köln open the campaign with a 3-2 win over Hoffenheim, producing a composed display in defence.
- In the 4-1 defeat to Stuttgart, Ermedin Demirovic got beyond the 28-year-old too easily.
- At Werder Bremen, Köln drew 1-1 after Niclas Füllkrug equalised. Lochoshvili could not prevent the goal and won only one of his eight aerial and ground duels combined.
- In the 2-1 loss to HSV, he lost his positioning from the corner that led to the opening goal. Yussuf Poulsen also ran past him in a similar way to Demirovic.
- Internationally, Georgia drew 0-0 with Ukraine before losing 1-0 to Northern Ireland. The Northern Ireland defeat ended Willy Sagnol’s spell as Georgia coach.
Lochoshvili has now gone five matches without a win for club and country. Against Northern Ireland, he won a penalty for Georgia, but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia failed to convert it.
Why Köln signed him
The 1.89m defender became an immediate regular after joining Nürnberg in summer 2025. He was one of the stable figures in a struggling side, bringing physicality, aggressive front-foot defending and a willingness to play forward from the back.
He seeks direct duels, is strong in the air and has recorded a top speed of 33.6 km/h. Köln saw those attributes as the basis for a new defensive organiser, whether used centrally or from the left side of the defence.
But the Bundesliga has presented a sharper test than the second tier, Austria’s top division or Serie B, where Lochoshvili played before Nürnberg. His anticipation and timing have not always held up under the faster pressure of the top flight.
Partnership still needs work
Köln have conceded in each of their first four league matches. Lochoshvili’s partnership with Simpson-Pusey remains a key area for improvement.
Simpson-Pusey, eight years younger than Lochoshvili, is in his first full season as a senior regular and has also had inconsistent moments. Köln need their intended senior defender to settle quickly if the back line is to become more reliable.
Lochoshvili has had steady phases in matches, but his errors have carried a heavy price. His adaptation will be closely tied to Köln’s ability to turn a shaky opening into a more secure Bundesliga campaign.
