Lyon arrive in Lens with the international break still clinging to the squad. Paulo Fonseca has had little time to put his team back together before Friday’s 20:45 trip to Bollaert-Delelis, where OL will be without three players and forced into a new central-defensive partnership.
Niakhaté ruled out, Ouedraogo faces long recovery
Moussa Niakhaté will miss the match after sustaining a hamstring injury while away with Senegal. The Lyon defender is not expected to return before the home fixture against Nice on 18 October, at the earliest.
The more serious setback concerns Mohamed Ouedraogo. The 23-year-old Burkina Faso full-back ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during training on Wednesday and is likely to be unavailable for around six months.
- Niakhaté suffered a hamstring problem on international duty with Senegal.
- His earliest projected return is Lyon’s match against Nice on 18 October.
- Ouedraogo damaged cruciate ligaments in his right knee in Wednesday training.
- The Burkina Faso defender is expected to be out for approximately six months.
Tagliafico unavailable after Argentina trip
Nicolás Tagliafico was also left out of the travelling group. The left-back was due back from Argentina only on Thursday afternoon, leaving Fonseca without enough time to include him for the journey to Pas-de-Calais.
The absences will bring an unfamiliar pairing at the heart of the Lyon defence, with Felix Bacher set to line up alongside Ruben Kluivert.
Fonseca’s disrupted international break
Fonseca said the break had been difficult to manage because only six first-team players were initially available at the club. Lyon used the opening week primarily for recovery after an unusually early start to the campaign at the end of June, caused by their Champions League third qualifying round and play-off commitments.
During the second week, the coaching staff worked on key collective details and involved reserve-team players before the internationals began to return.
“It was not an easy international break because we could only work with six players,” Fonseca said. “The first week was for rest. We must not forget that we started our season before everyone else. In the second week, we worked on important things for the team, including with young players from the reserve side, before welcoming back those returning from national teams.”
One session to rebuild the collective
Fonseca used the available preparations to rehearse defensive situations with Clinton Mata, Kluivert and Abner, while Corentin Tolisso, Tyler Morton and Tanner Tessmann worked on the connection between defence and midfield.
Yet the Lyon coach acknowledged that the main challenge was restoring collective rhythm with just one full training session, held on Thursday, before facing Lens.
- Lyon prepared defensive work involving Mata, Kluivert and Abner.
- Tolisso, Morton and Tessmann were included in midfield-link exercises.
- The squad had only one pre-match collective session before the Lens game.
- Fonseca said the returning internationals arrive from teams with different playing approaches.
“The hardest thing is finding team cohesion again with only one training session on the eve of the match,” Fonseca said. “Players come back from national teams where they play differently. But from what I saw this morning, the group is motivated. That is the most important thing.”
