Maduka Okoye’s place at Udinese has increasingly been accompanied by a public profile far beyond the penalty area. The Nigerian goalkeeper has become a familiar figure at fashion events and Formula 1, while social-media attention around his private life has followed him back to Friuli. Yet behind the wider fascination is a 27-year-old who has established himself as a dependable part of Udinese’s side since arriving in 2023.
A goalkeeper at the centre of attention
Okoye’s summer brought appearances at Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks, as well as the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he was a guest of Pirelli. A longstanding Formula 1 enthusiast, he used time away from football during the summer break to visit the United Kingdom and present the miniature Pirelli Pole Position Award to Kimi Antonelli after the driver’s pole position at Silverstone on 4 July.
His visibility has also translated into a sizeable online following, with more than two million Instagram followers. The attention had begun to grow after a pre-World Cup friendly against Portugal, when supporters began sharing images of him widely online. Nigeria did not take part in that World Cup, but many fans nevertheless labelled him the tournament’s most attractive player.
Okoye has treated that description with a mixture of embarrassment and humour.
“I have heard that before,” he said when asked whether he was the world’s most handsome footballer. “I do not know; I would not say it myself. If other people say it, that is fine, but I will not say it.”
Despite a summer spent between cities and high-profile events, he has insisted that the attention has not altered his sense of himself.
“Even if I travel around the world and things outside football are changing, it is important for me to remain the same guy I have always been,” Okoye said.
Public sightings and a private answer
Much of the discussion around Okoye has concerned encounters away from football. During Milan Fashion Week, he was asked about images of him with Argentine presenter Belén Rodríguez, who celebrated her 42nd birthday at the El Porteño Prohibido venue in Milan.
Okoye was among the guests on the evening. Videos recorded inside the venue showed the pair speaking and dancing together, leading to speculation online about a possible relationship. Those clips remain the only public indication of any connection, and neither has confirmed a romance. They were not following one another on Instagram at the time.
Asked directly about Rodríguez, the Udinese goalkeeper declined to elaborate: “Belén? I do not talk about my private life.”
- Okoye was also seen with US rapper Cardi B during Paris Fashion Week in July, including at the Jean-Paul Gaultier show and later on a Paris restaurant terrace.
- The pair were subsequently spotted in Italy, with sightings reported in Venice, Trieste and Udine after Okoye returned for Serie A preparations.
- Cardi B later described him in an interview as “a very sweet guy”, saying that his social-media image can make him appear tougher than he is.
- She added that he was “kind and caring” and, when asked whether they might be seen together again, replied: “I certainly hope so.”
Udinese’s established presence
For Udinese, the broader attention has come alongside a player who has earned his position through performances. Okoye joined the club in 2023 and has become a regular and trusted figure in the Friulian side. During the summer, his name was also linked with Juventus as a possible replacement for Michele Di Gregorio.
Born in Germany in 1999 to a Nigerian father and German mother, Okoye began in the Fortuna Düsseldorf youth system in his home city. His route into senior football took him to Sparta Rotterdam in 2020, where he made his first-team debut, before a spell at Watford and his eventual move into the Udinese group.
At international level, he chose Nigeria, the country of his father, and made his senior debut in a friendly against Brazil in 2019.
The 2024-25 case
Okoye was investigated during the 2024-25 season in relation to alleged betting activity following Udinese’s match against Lazio. The matter centred on an allegation that he had deliberately received a yellow card for time-wasting. He received a two-month sporting ban, while the criminal case was later dismissed.
A shirt launch built around club history
Udinese have also made Okoye a central face of their new third kit for the 2026-27 season, unveiled during Milan Fashion Week. The club used the occasion to mark 130 years of its history, connecting its local identity with a more contemporary presentation.
