Mainz 05 are weighing defensive changes for Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Borussia Mönchengladbach after individual errors undermined their 3-1 defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Urs Fischer’s side had built their early-season form on compact defending. They drew 0-0 with Paderborn and won 5-0 in Hamburg, conceding only one opposition chance across those two matches. Frankfurt exposed a less secure version of the back three.
Defensive selection under review
- Kacper Potulski, 18, and Fabio Gruber, 23, each made a major mistake in the build-up to a Frankfurt goal.
- The display does not alter Mainz’s view of either young defender, but it has raised questions over whether they should again start together in Gladbach.
- Gruber’s role as the central organiser is more demanding alongside the inexperienced Potulski than it would be with established teammates.
- Dominik Kohr, 32, remains unavailable until December following syndesmosis surgery. Stefan Posch, 29, and Danny da Costa, 33, offer Fischer more experience.
The international break gives Fischer room to treat the Gladbach match as a separate selection problem. Mainz will have three weeks before hosting Bayer Leverkusen, when the defensive picture may change again.
Possible back-three solutions
One route would keep both youngsters in the team but split the partnership. Posch could move in from the right, with Gruber shifted to the right side of the three. That would require Gruber to play a position he has not used for some time, while his lack of pace could be more noticeable there.
Another option is for Gruber to remain central, Posch to take the left-sided role from Potulski and da Costa to play on the right. It appears unlikely, partly because da Costa is also the leading cover for Anthony Caci at right wing-back.
The stronger indication is that Potulski will retain his place on the left. That points Fischer towards another possibility: Stefan Bell.
Bell back in the frame
- Bell, 35, returned to the matchday squad recently only after Kohr’s injury.
- At Tuesday’s public training session, Mainz used him in the middle of a defensive trio with Posch on one side and Potulski on the other.
- Gruber played for the opposing training side.
Bell is Mainz’s Bundesliga appearance record holder with 302 league matches. His training role suggests Fischer is considering a short-term change in the centre for the Borussia-Park fixture.
Such a move would not necessarily be a judgement on Gruber or a full return to regular starting duty for Bell. It would be a targeted attempt to give Mainz a more experienced balance after the Frankfurt setback.
