Manchester City climbed alone to the top of the Premier League after surviving an eight-goal contest against Sunderland, while two familiar faces from French football, Enzo Le Fée and Rayan Cherki, left their mark on a wild Sunday night.
City reach the summit after Sunderland thriller
City won 5-3 despite Sunderland producing some excellent collective football and repeatedly finding a way back into the match. Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Saturday opened the door, and City took full advantage to move clear at the head of the table.
- Enzo Fernández gave City the lead in the ninth minute from a free-kick. Dayann Métalhie, making his first league appearance, had conceded the set piece, while Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs was unable to deal with it properly.
- Sunderland responded three minutes later. Enzo Le Fée split the defensive line with a fine pass towards Brian Brobbey, who made it 1-1 in the 12th minute.
- City regained the advantage in the 29th minute through Cherki. The former Lyon midfielder pounced after Kevin Danso’s poor clearance was followed by confusion in the Sunderland area, firing City back in front at 2-1.
- Le Fée again unlocked City’s defence in the 37th minute, disguising a pass into the box towards Thomas Meunier as Sunderland drew level. Brobbey’s second goal completed another superb attacking move and made it 2-2.
- Antoine Semenyo restored City’s lead before the break, shooting through Danso’s legs after another scramble in the penalty area. His 43rd-minute strike made it 3-2.
- Erling Haaland then failed to hit the target after Iliman Ndiaye had generously supplied him just before half-time.
- Semenyo struck again in the 57th minute, seemingly putting City in control at 4-2.
- Sunderland refused to fade. Brobbey completed his hat-trick two minutes later after a remarkable penultimate pass from Granit Xhaka, reducing the deficit to 4-3.
- Haaland finally ended Sunderland’s resistance in the 83rd minute. It was his first goal against the club, the only Premier League opponent he had previously failed to score against, and it secured the 5-3 result.
Le Fée and Cherki deliver individual moments
Le Fée was at the centre of Sunderland’s brightest passages, with his passing for the first two Brobbey goals standing out in a performance of real technical authority. His ability to play through City’s lines gave Sunderland a route back into the game each time the home side threatened to pull away.
Cherki was less influential in open play, but his finish arrived at a pivotal moment. With City struggling to impose themselves after Sunderland’s early equaliser, he punished the defensive mistakes around him to swing the match back in City’s favour.
Sunderland will regret the defensive errors that proved costly, particularly in a match where their attacking quality and resilience were clear. City, however, found enough cutting edge to survive the disorder and take a significant three points.
Pressure eases for Pierre Sage
Elsewhere, Pierre Sage picked up a potentially vital result with Crystal Palace. Under major pressure during the week, he guided Palace to a 0-0 draw at Leeds after Thursday’s 4-0 Europa League win over Poznan.
The goalless draw may not end the scrutiny around Sage, but after the European victory it offered another timely step away from immediate danger.
