City are expected to challenge the outcome, but the scale of the case — centred on alleged breaches of financial regulations — has already reopened old arguments about titles, medals and the shape of the league’s recent past.
Davide de Gea, who played for Manchester United during the period covered by the allegations, was among those to react. Now with Fiorentina, the Madrid-born goalkeeper suggested that his own collection of honours might yet require a reassessment if City are stripped of trophies as part of any eventual punishment.
Rio Ferdinand, another former United figure from the era, took the joke a step further. The 47-year-old former England centre-back posted an image of his six Premier League winners’ medals, with an additional medal added to the picture. He later turned attention to Ryan Giggs, writing that, seriously, the Welshman ought to have 14 league titles, before encouraging the Premier League to act.
The responses reflect the rivalry that has defined much of modern Manchester football: City’s rise reshaped the domestic order, while United players from earlier title-winning squads have watched several championships move across the city. Any decision involving the redistribution of honours would therefore carry consequences well beyond a points deduction or financial sanction.
Rodri, described as a former City player, had previously defended the club’s record, insisting that its trophies had been earned and saying he trusted the club’s innocence. With an appeal expected, the legal process remains likely to run on, but the debate around City’s achievements has already reached former opponents across the city.
