At St James’ Park, Aston Villa found the composure that had been missing at the beginning of their season. Unai Emery’s side left Newcastle with a 1-0 victory shaped by Manzambi’s first-half header, a performance of control, and an injury concern for Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Away-day authority in Newcastle
- Villa settled into the contest quickly and carried more of the attacking responsibility, looking the likelier side to turn possession into a decisive chance.
- Manzambi broke the deadlock in the 36th minute, meeting the ball with a header that gave the visitors the lead they had been pushing for.
- Emi Buendía came close to widening the margin before the interval when his effort struck the post.
- Newcastle offered little sustained threat. Suzuki was largely untroubled, apart from a fine save to deny Sven Botman.
- Villa increased their speed after the break with Mbaye involved, continuing to seek a second goal rather than protecting their advantage.
- They did not take every opening: Mbaye passed up a chance after an impressive individual move, while Hornicek also had to deal with a Leon Goretzka shot.
- The visitors nevertheless saw out the match for a deserved win, although Wan-Bissaka’s injury was the clear negative from the afternoon.
Villa recover ground as Newcastle drift
The result draws Aston Villa level with Newcastle on points after a difficult opening to the campaign for Emery’s team. Having started poorly, Villa have gradually regained direction, and their display on Tyneside suggested a side becoming more secure with each week.
For Newcastle, the early-season picture remains uncomfortable. The Saudi-backed project has been weakened by the summer departure of its leading figures, including Eddie Howe, and the loss to Villa added another discouraging chapter. The home side were second best for much of the match, while Manzambi’s goal supplied Villa with the difference their overall play merited.
