Maresca Matches Guardiola’s Best Man City Start After Liverpool Rout

Manchester City left Anfield with a 3-0 win over Liverpool, carrying their perfect league opening from Merseyside back across the country to the Etihad Stadium. Enzo Maresca’s side have won all six of their Premier League matches so far, despite beginning the campaign under the shadow of an ongoing legal controversy around the club.

The news from the club

The result against one of City’s principal domestic rivals kept Maresca’s team top of the table on 18 points from 18. They hold a three-point advantage over Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

It is a sharp change from the uncertainty that followed City’s 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. Since then, Maresca has overseen an unbroken sequence of league victories, matching the best six-game starts previously recorded by Pep Guardiola in 2016-17 and again in 2023-24.

Maresca has now joined a small group of managers to begin a Premier League season with six successive wins. Guardiola achieved it twice, while Carlo Ancelotti did so at Chelsea and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reached the mark after taking over Manchester United in December 2018.

The next stop: Ipswich at the Etihad

City can set a new club benchmark when Ipswich Town visit the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, 17 October. Victory would make Maresca the first City manager to open a league campaign with seven consecutive wins.

For now, the Italian’s early months in Manchester have produced a flawless domestic league return: six matches, six victories, and a chance to turn an already notable start into a club record.
