Maresca’s Manchester City Make It Six Straight with 3-0 Liverpool Win

Manchester City left Anfield with a 3-0 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, extending Enzo Maresca’s perfect opening to the 2026/27 Premier League season to six matches. The result carried the visitors three points clear at the summit and gave their new head coach a place alongside a small group of fast-starting managers in the competition’s modern era.

For City, the journey back from Merseyside was about more than three points. Maresca said the whole club needed a result of this scale as it deals with the outside attention surrounding the club’s financial-rule case and guilty finding.

He said the win was important for the staff, players, supporters and the wider organisation, adding that his side must become accustomed to the noise beyond the pitch.

Quick facts

  • Manchester City won 3-0 at Liverpool on 11 October.
  • Maresca has won all six of his first Premier League fixtures as City coach.
  • City lead the 2026/27 table with 18 points, three ahead of champions Arsenal.
  • Paris Saint-Germain await in the Champions League on Wednesday.
  • Ipswich Town visit the Etihad Stadium next Saturday in the league.

Only three other managers have opened a Premier League campaign with six wins from their first six rounds. Pep Guardiola achieved it with City in 2016/17, Carlo Ancelotti did so during his first Chelsea season in 2009/10, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put together the run after taking charge of Manchester United in 2018/19.

Ancelotti was the only one of that trio to go on to win the English title that season. Maresca can set the competition’s standalone record for a manager beginning his tenure if City make it seven from seven against Ipswich.

City’s six-match league run

  • 23 August: Manchester City 2-1 Bournemouth
  • 28 August: Crystal Palace 1-4 Manchester City
  • 5 September: Manchester City 1-0 Coventry City
  • 13 September: Manchester United 0-1 Manchester City
  • 20 September: Manchester City 5-3 Sunderland
  • 11 October: Liverpool 0-3 Manchester City

The champions of England, Arsenal, sit on 15 points after six rounds, while City remain flawless on 18. Erling Haaland was among the City scorers in the emphatic Anfield success.

Before the Ipswich test brings the domestic record into focus, City turn towards Europe. Paris Saint-Germain are due in Manchester on Wednesday for the second round of the Champions League league phase.
