Marseille and Lille Stores Looted During Violent Unrest in France

Marseille’s Canebière, the historic artery running through the Mediterranean city, has become one of the football landmarks caught up in a violent weekend of unrest across France. Olympique de Marseille’s official store there was looted, while Lille’s city-centre shop also suffered major vandalism and theft.

The news from the club

Marseille condemned the attack on its La Canebière outlet and said the damage has forced a temporary closure. The store is operated by the club’s kit partner Puma, with OM extending its support to the company after the incident.

The club said supporters can still visit its other official shops in Marseille and promised an update once conditions allow the damaged outlet to reopen.

In Lille, the LOSC store on Rue Faidherbe was targeted on Saturday and will remain shut until further notice. The club thanked its shop employees as well as passers-by, both supporters and non-supporters, who offered practical help and comforting words in the immediate aftermath.

The incidents came amid some of France’s most serious disorder for years. Protests over rising prices and worsening public services, including schools, led to widespread damage and looting of businesses, alongside thousands of arrests.

Authorities in Marseille responded by banning public gatherings and demonstrations throughout the city from midday until 20:00 on Monday.

European dates remain on the calendar

Marseille are ninth in Ligue 1 after seven rounds and travel to Austria on Thursday to face Sturm Graz in the Europa League.

Lille, coached by Davide Ancelotti, sit fourth in the French table and are level on points with leaders Paris Saint-Germain. They host Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday.
