Marseille Bounce Back From Early Scare to Thrash Angers 5-2

Marseille had barely settled into the Raymond-Kopa Stadium before the evening turned awkward. Angers struck after 15 minutes, but OM recovered their footing and then swept past the hosts, winning 5-2 in the seventh round of Ligue 1.

Marseille find a response in Angers

  1. Angers opened the scoring in the first quarter-hour, leaving Marseille behind early in the match.
  2. OM responded to overturn the deficit, with Himad Abdelli marking his return in front of his former home crowd alongside Nouhoum Kamissoko, Amine Gouiri, Amine Harit and Igor Paixao on the scoresheet.
  3. Angers reduced the gap to 3-2, creating a moment that could have unsettled the visitors.
  4. Instead of retreating, Marseille continued to attack and added further goals to secure a commanding 5-2 victory.

The result followed last weekend’s more restrained 2-0 win at Troyes and gave Bruno Genesio a second successive league victory. Marseille were provisionally ninth in the table after the match.

Genesio sees progress, not a finished job

The 60-year-old Marseille coach said the win brought relief, while insisting that the team still has work ahead.

“I am relieved because we needed these victories,” Genesio said. “It allows us to climb the standings into an area where we can be a little calmer. That does not mean everything has been solved.”

He pointed to next Sunday’s home fixture against Le Havre as another important step if OM are to extend their Ligue 1 run and approach upcoming games with greater confidence.

Genesio also felt his side had improved on the display at Troyes. He cited the 1-0 Europa League defeat to Olympiacos as a good performance despite the result, and was particularly pleased that his players accepted responsibility in Angers.

A first comeback of the season

For Genesio, the most important detail was Marseille’s reaction after falling behind. It was the first time this season that OM had won a match after trailing.

“Nothing is perfect and we have not fixed everything,” he said. “But it is a good win with many positive points.”

He described Angers’ early goal as unfortunate and somewhat against the balance of play. The subsequent 3-2 scoreline could have made Marseille nervous, he said, but the team instead pushed forward and maintained its approach.

“We often speak about the mental side, and many things happen there,” Genesio added. “This match must show us that we can do good things and impose our game, away from home as well as at home.”

European trip before a demanding home run

  1. Marseille travel to Austria on Thursday for their Europa League match against Sturm Graz, kicking off at 18:45.
  2. They return to Ligue 1 duty next Sunday when Le Havre visit Marseille.
  3. Toulouse then come to the Stade Vélodrome on 1 November.
