Marseille head into the international break with the Vélodrome lights fading on an alarming start. Defeat to Paris Saint-Germain has left OM in the Ligue 1 relegation zone after five matches, a position the club has not occupied this late in a season for more than a decade.
A historicly poor opening for Marseille

- The result left OM 17th in Ligue 1, second from bottom, when the international break began.
- It is the first time in Marseille’s history that they have lost four of their opening five league fixtures.
- The last time OM were in the relegation places at such an advanced point of a campaign came in 2011-12, when they were bottom after six games with three points.
- Marseille recovered to finish 10th that season, but the current table offers little comfort after such a damaging early run.
The derby defeat has therefore deepened the pressure around Marseille. Five rounds into the French season, OM are already facing a table and a record neither the club nor its supporters expected to see.
