Marseille Drop Into Relegation Zone After PSG Defeat

Marseille head into the international break with the Vélodrome lights fading on an alarming start. Defeat to Paris Saint-Germain has left OM in the Ligue 1 relegation zone after five matches, a position the club has not occupied this late in a season for more than a decade.

A historicly poor opening for Marseille

  1. Marseille were beaten 2-1 by PSG at the Vélodrome on Sunday.
  2. The result left OM 17th in Ligue 1, second from bottom, when the international break began.
  3. It is the first time in Marseille’s history that they have lost four of their opening five league fixtures.
  4. The last time OM were in the relegation places at such an advanced point of a campaign came in 2011-12, when they were bottom after six games with three points.
  5. Marseille recovered to finish 10th that season, but the current table offers little comfort after such a damaging early run.

The derby defeat has therefore deepened the pressure around Marseille. Five rounds into the French season, OM are already facing a table and a record neither the club nor its supporters expected to see.
