Supporters in Marseille’s two ends had criticised the American shareholder before the previous home matches against Strasbourg and Paris FC. The protest continued ahead of PSG’s visit, despite the occasion also bringing the usual hostile chants aimed at the Parisian side.
In the north stand, the Fanatics displayed again a banner previously shown at the last home game: “McCourt sold out.”
A second message, placed lower down in the stand, contrasted the promise made when McCourt took control of the club with supporters’ fears over its direction.
The banner read: “2016: Champions Project. 2026: Ligue 2 Project. McCourt out.”
McCourt became Marseille’s owner in 2016, when the club’s new era was presented as the Champions Project. The supporters’ message suggested deep frustration with the club’s current trajectory, invoking the possibility of relegation to Ligue 2.
The next appointment in France
Marseille’s immediate focus was Le Classique at the Vélodrome against Paris Saint-Germain, played amid renewed pressure from sections of the home support on the club’s ownership.
