In Monterrey, Matías Almeyda has rejected comments attributed to him in a dispute that has reached across to Club América.
The Monterrey coach said he had been credited with words he never spoke, and criticised the way those alleged remarks were then used in a question put to an América player. Almeyda described the line of questioning as ill-intentioned, insisting that the premise behind it was false because the supposed comments did not come from him.
The episode adds an off-pitch edge to Monterrey’s dealings with one of Mexico’s most prominent clubs, with Almeyda making clear that he does not accept responsibility for statements circulated in his name.
