Max Fried will take the mound Wednesday night with the Yankees’ season hanging in the balance, carrying the same three-word message that caught his eye when he first visited Yankee Stadium as a free agent two winters ago: prepare, compete, win.
Fried gets the ball in elimination spot
The left-hander is scheduled to start Game 3 of the American League Division Series against the Rays at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch set for 8 p.m. ET on TBS, truTV, UniMas and HBO Max. New York must win to keep playing.
Manager Aaron Boone confirmed Fried’s assignment after the Yankees’ 5-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Monday night at Tropicana Field. Fried understands that there will be no reason to conserve his workload.
“It is win or go home,” Fried said Tuesday. “There is nothing to hold back for. I know the leash may be short, and everybody has to do whatever it takes. My job is to leave it all out there.”
- Fried will make his third start against Tampa Bay this season.
- Carlos Rodón is lined up for a possible Game 4 on Thursday.
- Rodón has been available from the bullpen during all four Yankees postseason games, though he has not appeared in one.
- His last outing came Sept. 22, when he threw eight scoreless innings against the Rays in the opening game of a Bronx doubleheader.
Pitching coach Matt Blake said the Yankees considered Fried and Rodón strong choices, but the rotation arrangement made Fried the natural Game 3 call.
“Max has been one of our guys, and we want to go with him here,” Blake said, adding that there was not much internal debate over the decision.
A recent October response and a strong Rays history
Fried arrives off one of the Yankees’ better postseason pitching performances. In the deciding Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against Boston last Wednesday, he worked six innings, gave up one run on three hits, walked one and struck out six. It was his third postseason start since joining New York.
The Rays have seen him twice already in 2026, with sharply different results.
- On April 11 at Tropicana Field, Fried yielded three runs over eight innings and received no decision.
- On Sept. 22, in the nightcap of the doubleheader, he took the loss after pitching 6 2/3 innings as Tampa Bay clinched the AL East.
- Across seven career starts against the Rays, Fried owns a 5-1 record and a 1.81 ERA.
- In three starts against Tampa Bay during the 2025 season, he went 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA.
Boone said the Yankees believe Fried gives them the kind of starting pitching needed to extend the series.
“We have an opportunity to win a game Wednesday night, and Max gives us an excellent chance to do that,” Boone said.
Wells sees a full pitching toolbox
Austin Wells will catch Fried again in Game 3, and the Yankees catcher pointed to the left-hander’s range of pitches and ability to get outs in different ways.
“He can pretty much do whatever he wants out there,” Wells said. “He has so many weapons and so much ability to get people out. He will be himself and give us a great opportunity to win.”
Fried’s 2026 season has included two injured-list stints because of a bone bruise in his pitching elbow. Asked to assess the year, he declined to put a bow on it.
“My season is not over,” Fried said.
That is the line the Yankees are trying to preserve Wednesday night in the Bronx.
